J.J. Oversteegen (1926-1999), professor in Dutch literature and literary Theory, published an elaborate biography of Cola Debrot, the Antillean poet-doctor-Governor of the Netherlans Antilles, in 1994.
In connection with the documentation for this work he made several trips to the Netherlands Antilles, where he came to meet de painter José Capricorne. He was fascinated by Capricorne's art and decided to start a monograph on his work. He managed to finish this project just before he died in July 1999.

José Maria Capricorne, born in 1932, is one of the classic artists of the modern Caribbean.
His vigorous lines and colourful figures communicate with an energetic and mobile imaginary that relates to a world full of popular interpretations of daily life.
The points of reference for Capricorne are the natural environment and the history of the Caribbean.
This book is the second monograph, published in English, on Capricorne's work.
Valdemar Marcha has written a comprehensive introductory essay about social cohesion in Curaçao.
And Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger presents some co-ordinates for the interpretation of Capricorne's Brasiliana series, first exhibited in the Galerie Forum Berlin am Meer (February 4 - March 20, 2005).
